Dialysis pump with maintenance-free bearings

Profile

  • What was needed: Spherical bearings for use in a dialysis pump
  • Requirements: Long service life, temperature resistance, minimised maintenance, lubrication-free
  • Application area: Medical technology, fluid technology
The Japanese company Iwaki is one of the world's leading manufacturers of chemical pumps and flow control devices. Its strength lies in the production of various models in small batch sizes, which makes it possible to fulfil the requirements of a wide range of industrial sectors. The products also include wobble piston pumps, which can be found in many laboratory applications and especially in dialysis machines thanks to their high dosing accuracy for viscous media with low pulsation.

Problem

Iwaki originally used metal spherical bearings in its dialysis pumps, which made constant relubrication necessary. The developers were therefore looking for a long-lasting, disruption-free alternative that would minimise maintenance costs.

Solution

With igubal spherical bearings, which do not require any lubrication, the perfect solution was found. To determine whether the use of the plastic bearings is worthwhile, Iwaki carried out a test in which the pump equipped with igubal was moved for 10,000 hours in a temperature cycle from -10 to +60 degrees - with satisfactory results. The pumps have been operating reliably and without disruptions for over 7 years.
